Archive - DITM>Albert Hofmann has passed away today
Sebastians_ghost 23:01 29-04-2008
Fellow Bluelighters,

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of Albert Hofmann earlier today. The following excerpt comes from Rick Doblin, a close friend of Dr. Hofmann:

The only people who were told were people from Burg, the village where he lived, and Peter and others were surprised the word of his death had gotten out so quickly. It's the age of the internet...

Albert had been increasingly thinking of death these last few months. He had stopped leaving his home, where he said he could feel the spirit of Anita, his wife who died December 20, 2007. He didn't come to the World Psychedelic Forum a month ago, but did entertain some visitors at his home. We spoke on the phone the day after the Basel conference and he was happy and fulfilled. He'd seen the renewal of LSD psychotherapy
research with his own eyes, as had Anita. I said that I looked forward to discussing the results of the study with him in about a year and a half and he laughed and said he'd try to help the research however he could, either from this side or "the other side".

Now it even more falls on younger generations to transform LSD into a legal medicine and beyond that into a tool for personal growth legally available to all."

Rick

Dr. Hofmann has left us with a challenge. Know that as Bluelighters, we are all part of a greater movement to meet the challenge of transforming LSD and other mind-expanding substances into legal medicine, realizing Dr. Hofmann's dream.

^^^ I doubt there is a link yet...the quoted email is from Rick Doblin of MAPS.org.

I'll have to wait then. I'm going to bed soon anyway, hopefully (well, if that's the right word) there'll be one when I wake up.

Heard about this on another forum, sad to hear it seems legit... but at the same time happy to hear how Rick described his passing and the months before it. Albert Hofmann was truly an inspirational figure, and I'm glad he's with his wife and was able to take death with a smile. Peace to you Albert, thanks for everything you've done.

Albert Hofmann will live forever.

If I had some LSD I would take it right now in his honor. I will smoke this herb for him though!

Jan 29 2008: Albert Hofmann passed away at his home at 9am on Tuesday Apr 29, 2008 of a heart attack at the age of 102. He will be missed. [Yes, this is confirmed. It isn't a rumor -- earth]
Summary
Albert Hofmann was born in Baden, Switzerland in 1906. He graduated from the University of Zürich with a degree in chemistry in 1929 and went to work for Sandoz Pharmaceutical in Basel, Switzerland. With the laboratory goal of working towards isolation of the active principles of known medicinal plants, Hofmann worked with Mediterranean squill (Scilla maritima) for several years, before moving on to the study of Claviceps purpurea (ergot) and ergot alkaloids.

Over the next few years, he worked his way through the lysergic acid derivatives, eventually synthesizing LSD-25 for the first time in 1938. After minimal testing, LSD-25 was set aside as he continued with other derivatives. Four years later, on April 16, 1943, he re-synthesized LSD-25 because he felt he might have missed something the first time around. That day, he became the first human to experience the effects of LSD after accidentally ingesting a minute amount. Three days later, on April 19, 1943, he decided to verify his results by intentionally ingesting 250 ug of LSD. This day has become known as "Bicycle Day" as Hofmann experienced an incredible bicycle ride on his way home from the lab.

In addition to his discovery of LSD, he was also the first to synthesize psilocybin (the active constituent of 'magic mushrooms') in 1958. Albert Hofmann, known as the 'father of LSD', continued to work at Sandoz until 1971 when he retired as Director of Research for the Department of Natural Products. He continued to write, lecture, and play a leading role as an elder in the psychedelic community until his death at the age of 102.

On one hand, this is sad, but on the other hand, the universe is blessed with his energy flowing freely. Hopefully his death will allow some positive light to be held on his amazing discoveries.
