Other Drugs>Information On The New OxyContin Dosage Strengths (5mg, 15mg, 30mg, 60mg)
the unknown 19:26 16-02-2007
Purdue has created new dosage units for their OxyContin product. When i first read that someone had put that OxyContin comes in 5,10,15,30,40,60,80, and 160mg units on Wikipedia i immediately erased it and changed it to the normal "real" doses. But then someone put it back and backed it up with sources and the Package Insert for Oxycontin. I downloaded the package insert in PDF format and it confirms it!
Below is the link for the PDF file (straight from FDA.GOV) and Wikipedia information.
http://www.fda.gov/cder/foi/label/20...553s056lbl.pdf
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxycodone
My questions about this are...
1) Has anyone else heard of this? Even with all this information and package insert i still am skeptical. Although the PDF file comes straight from the FDA.gov website so i dont know...But i guess anything is possible because i know for a fact now that it comes in 5mg strength and i thought that was rediculous when i first heard it.
2) Has anyone got these or seen these in person? I really don't think these will be showing up on the streets for a long time.
3) Where are they distributed? I know that Purdue Pharma markets the 10/20/40/80/160 strengths in the USA and that Mundi Pharma makes all those doses AND the 5mg dose outside the USA. EDIT: Looking at the package label Purdue Pharma manuf these...
(Here is some information taken from the package insert...)
OxyContin® (oxycodone hydrochloride controlled-release) Tablets 15 mg are round,
unscored, gray-colored, convex tablets imprinted with OC on one side and 15 on the other.
They are supplied as follows:
OxyContin® (oxycodone hydrochloride controlled-release) Tablets 30 mg are round,
unscored, brown-colored, convex tablets imprinted with OC on one side and 30 on the other.
They are supplied as follows:
OxyContin® (oxycodone hydrochloride controlled-release) Tablets 60 mg are round,
unscored red-colored, convex tablets imprinted with OC on one side and 60 on the other.
They are supplied as follows:
OxyContin 60 mg, 80 mg, and 160 mg Tablets ARE FOR USE IN OPIOIDTOLERANT
PATIENTS ONLY. These tablet strengths may cause fatal respiratory
depression when administered to patients not previously exposed to opioids.
In summary; the 5mg strength is sky blue, the 15mg strength is gray, the 30mg strength is brown, the 60mg strength is red. Pretty gross colors except for the 60mg strength. Also, i wonder if the inactive ingredients are the same and the are just simply new doses without all the BS ingredients like TEVA / IMPAX / ENDO puts in them. Those 60mg tablets seem like the perfect dose...
Any questions let me know

That document is dated March 28, 2006. So, I guess it shouldn't be breaking news anymore.

^ jeez sorry i was just tryin to help and share the information. Yes its a little old but it appears NO one has been talking about this and everyone i talked to has no idea about this. Not sure why it hasnt been a big deal...
No need to roll your eyes and point out the bad things...

I didn't notice the date when I read it either, 5mg over 12 hours? God gimme a break! That is like.... what's it called Percodan-demi 2.5/350 , i bet they only rock by the handfull.
and then there's "OxyContin 60 mg, 80 mg, and 160 mg Tablets are for opioid tolerant patients only"
Despite the date, has anyone seen these crazy doses? 5mg, 15, 60?
Thanks for the info. anyay, interesting read.

That is really interesting. Can anyone confirm this?

wow, ive heard about the mysterious red 60mg OC. I had always heard that the 60mg pill was slated for production for some reason. They had a prototype version or something but it was never relased to the market. Whats the point of a 5mg oc anyways? that seems like such a low dose, even for someone with no opiate tolerance what so ever. Why not just take a percocet instead? that way you get the at once....weird.

Well they make 2.5mg percocet (4-6hrs) so 5mg oxycontin (8-12hrs) seems reasonable based on this. Oxycontin seems to last roughly double of what instant release oxycodone lasts. Except with oxycontin the level in the bloodstream has a much smoother curve.

I see the 15's all the time. I guess someone in my family has a prescription. I've seen them for a while, now. So I'm guessing the others have been around for a while, now, too.

yeah, those are instant release oxycodone though.
I read about the sky blue 5mg ones not to lonag ago.
but the others is intriguing.
and to the person that said the 60mg one seemed like the perfect one, yeah....maybe for you. for someone like me 100mg one would be perfect.

I think the 160mg pill was first used, but then was taken off the market. I would assume that they would keep it off, but it would be great to only have to take 2 pills rather than 4 and the cost is probably a bit cheaper as well...

Anyone have any idea whether or not companies besides purdue will be able to immediately make generic versions of these new 5, 15, 30, and 60mg doses? or would they have to wait ten years, as if it was considered to be a new drug, to make generics? just wondering if anyone knew or had an opinion.. also anyone whose tried these--like the OP asked, are there crappy fillers like the TEVA, etc. generics in the new red 60s or brown 30s?
Thanks for any answers

I can confirm the 15mg oxycodone tablets are out and about. From personal experience, they really feel like IR rather than ER, and they very well may be.
I haven't seen the 30's or 60's yet, though.

^ they can't be IR.
the contin stands for CONTINuous release

I am prescribed the 5 mg oxycontins. I live in Canada but im not sure the US or Mexico have them. Anyways i take 25 mg of oxycontin 3 times a day(75 mg),I get the 20's and the 5's. The 5's are blue and have cdn on the other side like all oxycontin in Canada.

That actually makes more sense IMO. Having a time released pill of only 5mg seemed pointless, but if its to adjust between doses, as it seems to be for you, that does make sense.
If 20 is not and 30 too much, 25 should be just fine. Interesting...
