Update 10/4/11:
Added new compounds. Added proper results for 5/6-APB
Update 13/12/10:
Added new compounds. Stitched together the best results, and added column for simons/robadope where the results were meaningful (however, due to the unpleasantness of performing the test, these are theoretical results, as you can see).
Before you begin:
Fizz: Fizz is meaningless when identifying the compound present - it only tells you that the sample was present as the HCl salt (or salt of a similar volitile acid). Hence, fizz is proportional to the amount of Whatever HCl you dumped in. When fizz is useful is if you are testing something, and you see a lot of fizz, but only a slow color change to the expected compound, or when you think you have the base, and it fizzes, you know you don't have the base.
Smell: Know what cathinones (ie, mephedrone) smell like. Buy a sample of the filthy things if you have to. The majority of misrepresented RC's on the market are cathinones being sold as something less shitty. Put your sample into a sealed container for a while, then open it up, and give it a smell (not a snort) - if it smells like cathinones, you've got cathinones in your sample. I'm sure there are ways to camoflage the smell, so don't rely 100% on this, but it's a great way to pick out the obvious fakes.
Beta Ketones and Various RC stims/empathogens

5/6-APB:
Results from production 5 and 6 APB are now available:
Marquis - rusty brown
Mecke - Black
Mandellin -Purple/brown, slow to develop
Robadope - Positive
Simons - Negative
Note that the sample batches sent out was different. I suspect it was 6-APDB. It was also a superior drug, pity they didn't make more of it available.
I've also included results for a sample batch of fake 6-APB, for completeness sake.
5-IAI
Marquis - brown-grey
Mecke - yellow
Mandellin - no reaction
Robadope - Positive
Simons - Negative
NOTE: Previous 5-IAI results posted were for FAKE PRODUCT. The old, inaccurate results have been removed.
By the way, don't bother getting the real thing. It sucks - ~400mg doses, nothing exciting, and in some people (like me) it produces nothing by dysphoria. At only 50mg, i experienced anhedonia and depression for 6-8 hours, with no pleasurable effects. Favorite food tasted like cardboard, favorite games were a chore, etc. But I digress...
4-Flouroamphetamine:
Marquis - no reaction if only small amount used. If you dump a whole pile of it in, it'll turn brownish orange.
Mecke - no reaction
Mandellin - no reaction
Robadope - Positive
Simons - Negative
Notes:
Desoxypipiradrol
All slow and weak color changes.
Marquis - brown
Mecke - brown

Mandellin - no change
Robadope - Positive
Simons - Negative
pFPP
Marquis - no reaction
Mecke - slight browning
Mandellin - no change
Robadope - Negative
Simons - Positive? It should be positive...
MDAT:
Not shown.
All reactions slow. Strange colors, changing over time, all colors weak.
Robadope - Positive
Simons - Negative
Key points to take away:
These reagents are not sufficient for differentiation between cathinones of similar structure.
These reagents are not sufficient for detection or identification of 4-FA or pipirazines, nor weak OTC stimulants - though 4-FA will test positive with robadope.
These reagents are not sufficient to confidently confirm presence of mephedrone.
These reagents are not sufficient to confidently rule out the presence of most cathinones in combination with other agents that produce strong colors. Sniff test and Simons may be helpful here.
These reagents are not sufficient to confirm or rule out presence of desoxypipiradrol in combination with other agents, especially as the active dose is very low. Luckily I am not aware of this horrible drug showing up as an adulterant.
2-AI, which many people have reported dangerous reactions from, stands out like a sore thumb when tested with the mandellin reagent.
MDAI on the market is so filthy that the impurities confound identification with the marquis reagent.
These reagents are not sufficient to identify MDAT (luckily, it is obscure (hence unlikely to be sold as something else), not particularly potent or dangerous, and has a very distinctive appearance - yellow translucent crystals between 1/16th and 1/4th of an inch along their largest dimension.
Sedatives
All changes are slow, and weak. For the benzos, ~3-5mg was used per spot; an ass-whooping dose for a non-tolerant user, and still presented only weak color change that took a while to develop.
Key point to take away:
These reagents are not sufficient for testing for the presence of these RC sedatives.
These reagents are not sufficient to identify any RC sedatives even when the presence of a sedative is suspected.

Key points:
These reagents are suitable for identifying 4-halo 2C's; differentiation between them is possible but difficult.
These reagents are suitable for identifying 4-alkyl 2C's; differentiation between them is not realistically possible.
These reagents are excellent for identifying 4-thioalkyl 2C's; differentiation between them is not practical without reference samples.
I am unable to replicate results indicating that 2C-E produces a green or yellow color, yet these chemicals are known good, and produce effects that are in every way consistent with expectations, including the characteristic durations and dosages for 2C-D/E/P.

11-07-2010 21:44The only one there that I have any doubt about is the 5-IAI - that's part of why I finally got off my ass and did this - I wanted to compare it to the other likely possibilities, so i could know that it was not naphyrone or meph or something. It's reaction was rather distinctive, particularly in how slow it was.
The 6-APB is from the clean sample batch, and has been assayed.

Fantastic TheAzo! To help further, you might like to consider investing in a few porcelain spot test plates.
Mephedrone
Marquis - no color change, some fizz
At last, someone else reports this. A chemist from our team found the same result with pure 4-MMC (used as analytical ref), yet all reports here have stated a yellow reaction product. I suspect 4-methyl bromopropiophenone or another synth impurity could be the culprit.
Also interesting to see the 6-APB result. Looks like there was no purple in the reaction, which fits the description of a test result in Aus. The tablet was assumed by users to be MDMA.
Thanks again

12-07-2010 21:43This is awesome, thanks for the detailed and clear presentation. I think the pair of photos 2min and 30min after testing is instructive too, nice work!
Thanks again

13-07-2010 01:15Big win mate.. Interesting to see test results for 6-APB.
My tests on mephedrone with marquis always produced an orange result, similar to amphetamine.

13-07-2010 08:32Set 4: Tryptamines

Image taken 30 minutes after experiment, but no changes after the first minute or so except where noted. Fizzing noted for all chemicals tested as the salt.
Tryptamines are very unlikely adulterants, with the possible exception of (the rather useless) 5-MeO-DALT; they are expensive and of somewhat limited availability.
DMT
Marquis - yellow
Mecke - Brown, fades to red over time.
Mandellin - yellow
4-AcO-DMT
Marquis - grey-green, white precipitate forming over time.
Mecke - Brown/black
Mandellin - yellow/orange
5-MeO-DMT
Marquis - Orange
Mecke - Red/Brown
Mandellin - Yellow
4-AcO-DiPT
Marquis - yellow
Mecke - Brown/Black.
Mandellin - orange
4-HO-MiPT
Marquis - grey/green
Mecke - Brown
Mandellin - brown/orange
5-MeO-MiPT
Marquis - yellow
Mecke - Red/Brown
Mandellin - yellow
4-HO-DALT
Marquis - yellow, white precipitate over time
Mecke - Brown
Mandellin - orange
5-MeO-DALT
Marquis - slight yellow
Mecke - Red/Brown
Mandellin - yellow
4-MeO-PCP
Marquis - no change
Mecke - very slight brown
Mandellin - very slight yellow
Key Points:
These reagents are sufficient for detecting tryptamines.
These reagents are sufficient for narrowing the range of possible tryptamines, but not for positive identification.
Mecke turns reddish brown in the presence of 5-MeO-T's, and brown in the presence of 4-HO/4-AcO-T's.
These reagents are not sufficient to detect 4-MeO-PCP.

Conclusion/comments:
These reagents are sufficient to detect synthetic cannabinoids in common circulation
These reagents are sufficient to distinguish between classes of synthetic cannabinoids, but not between closely related compounds.
It is as yet unverified whether these are suitable for analysis of smoke blends, or determination of adulterants in cannabis.Last edited by TheAzo; 04-10-2011 at 09:00.
