Okay, actually it's not rated and the title of the movie is The Devil's Playground. Just watched this last night and it is a fantastic documentary that details the coming of age of Amish teenagers. At age 16 Amish kids are turned loose into the surrounding world and must make a choice by age 21 as to whether, or not they wish to be Amish. These kids partay the fuk down and one of the kids they follow is an Amish meth dealer turned *N*A*R*C*. Anyway, I highly recommend this movie.

i heard about this tradition a while ago, and i was shocked. those amish kids can do more at age 16 than i was allowed to do. and their parents encourage this?!?! i'll definitely check this film out when i can get my hands on it... i'd really like to check this out.

It's so true. They were having keg parties on Amish land for 16 year olds drawing as many as 1,500! people. Because they have to drop out of school after the 8th grade they take jobs in factories and what not near the Amish land. By age 17 they are living on their own, have cars, and party every fucking night. I never partied like those kids do.

I've seen Devil's Playground. The majority of that movie was shot like an hour away from my house. LaGrange County, Indiana. It's pretty crazy that the Amish have rumspringa, but that's basiclly puberty for us English. I guess the Amish are retaining like 95% of there kids. The other 5% become ravers.

Amish are a Dutch religious group that fled Europe in the early days of this country's formation. They were persecuted because they don't believe in infant baptism. You're only baptised after having played in the 'Devil's Playground'. What they are more well known for; however, is their refusal to embrace technology. Although they do use some modern devices, they basically live as people lived in the 1700's. Their mode of transportation is still horse and buggy.

That's mad. I'd never heard of that before. What are their numbers? Is it just one group or are they all over the place?

I don't know how many there are. A lot. 250,000? They have communities in most states, but are concentrated in Pennslyvania (northeast) and all over the mid west.

While in the devil's play ground they are free to, even encouraged, to use and partake in modern life... cars, radio, tv... drugs. After baptism it's back to the old... old, old ways.

My grandma was raised by Amish so we were always taught to respect them deeply. Almost all the Amish choose to stay in the order and leave the "english world" as they refer to it as after those years.The Amish don't believe in baptism and believe the child must choose the Amish way of life on his or her own free will so that is the point of these years. like i said, almost all stay Amish.
My family is from Berne, Indiana where the movie Witness was filmed and the most orthodox Amish live. (the Shartzentrubers)They only wear black and white unlike the Pennsylvania Amish and they also are not allowed covered wagons nor rubber tires on their wagons. Each order sets its own rules about moderazation and what they think God would approve of.

Unfortunatly as much as i idolized them when i was little now as an adult since i've gone back to Indiana and have seen another light. For example, my uncles farm in Monroe is plopped all around Amish farms. He has employed some to help him either at his house as a nanny or to work on his farm or in his mill. A few of the women washed their hair in his sink. And they have also secretly done their clothes in the dryer in the freezer winter. My aunt says she has also caught them sneaking a joke or two off the tv because she heard them laughing once and found the tv on in the room they were just in and she had that tv off.
Some men are also known to sneak a little porn mags in the barn while tapping the bottle.They just fell a little off their pedastal i had put them on. My grandma also was a midwife/nurse practioner and had a practice for the Amish for delivering their babies so perhaps that's how they got on the pedastal..

They are also doing a lot of "mingling" so to speak right now with Amish orders from other states that they never really did much of before. Because they stayed within their own orders for so long that their is interbreeding going on. In fact, before you get married if you are Amish you must have a bloodtest done to see if you are too close genetically. They won't let you get married if they think your child has a chance of new hereditary diseases that are popping up among the orders just like Ty Sachs disease in orthodox Jews.

I saw it about a month ago...

I thought it was OK; the subject matter alone makes it worth watching, but it could have been much more interesting. It seemed like every kid they followed pretty much had the same story, "Being Amish is hard, I wish I could live like the English, but I love my family, what should I do, etc." It just got tedious pretty quickly for such a short documentary. I would recommend it to anyone for a rental, just for the scenes of Amish kids partyin it up, or the meth dealer kid tweekin during his interviews, but the rest of the movie is kinda boring...

I have much respect for the amish.

For the most part they avoid the hypocrisy the rest of Christian America falls into as a community. And for the most part, they've taken their lifestyle and lived it they're fucken way.

As i don't agree with their beliefs and lifestyle... i must give em props.

after this period if they choose not to be Amish (which is a very small percentage) they are not shunned. They can still be friends with the Amish and keep in contact with their family although they will have to leave their Amish community benefits behind. If they are baptised and then they leave later they will be shunned.

Does anyone else see it as a bit hypocritical that they aren't even allowed RUBBER - but when it comes down to it they are willing to do super-sophisticated modern DNA testing to manage their population issues?

^^they didn't want to do it, they are required by law to have it done. before they are legally married they have to summit their results to the health dept for an approval

There aren't many Amish people in my area, and as a matter of fact the only ones I can remember seeing are ones who have been just passing through. I have seen them in larger cities and stuff though, and have always found them interesting. It takes a strong devotion to one's religion to not give in to modern temptations which would make your life 10x easier.

^whie i cant voue for larger citites i know here (northeastern MD) they arer everywhere only about 20min. fgomr lancaster wich if anyone knows host a huge popultion of amish and menenites( a little more lax ) really really facinating people my mother was once allowed to photograph some of their daily activiteis(this is very rare)ill have to scan some of the images if i can dig htem up. i'm sure some people on here have been to dutch wonderland when they were younger
